What is Google Drive?

Google Drive stores files online and gives people a shared place to organize, access and collaborate on them. Its appeal is the connection between storage and everyday work: a folder can hold documents, spreadsheets, PDFs and other files, with links and permissions controlling who can view, comment or edit. Desktop sync and mobile access make that collection available beyond a browser.

Personal and business purchases solve different problems. Google One expands an individual account’s storage, which is shared with Gmail and Google Photos. Organizations should compare Google Workspace for shared drives, ownership, administration and plan-dependent security or Gemini features. More storage alone does not provide all of those team controls.

What stands out

  • Files and Google’s collaborative document tools work closely together.
  • Viewer, commenter and editor permissions make shared links useful for different audiences.
  • Desktop sync and mobile apps support access across devices.

Plan limits

  • The free 15 GB allowance is shared with Gmail and Google Photos.
  • Google One storage upgrades do not replace Workspace business administration.
  • Advanced Gemini and security capabilities depend on the selected Workspace or AI plan.
